Municipal GIS Feature Mapping for the Town of Peace River

Updated: Jun 9

Orthophoto, Hydro-Flattened Water Features, Building Footprints, and Infrastructure Mapping

Integrated LiDAR and aerial imagery processing delivering GIS-ready datasets for municipal planning, engineering analysis, and asset management.  Project Summary

This project involves aerial survey acquisition using LiDAR and high-resolution imagery over the Town of Peace River and surrounding municipal lands. The program supports the Town’s Infrastructure and Development department by providing current, high-accuracy geospatial datasets aligned with municipal standards and operational requirements.

The project updates orthophoto mosaics, digital elevation models, contours, building footprints, and feature mapping. These datasets provide a reliable and current geospatial foundation to support infrastructure planning, asset management, engineering analysis, and future development initiatives within Peace River.

Problem / Objective

The Town of Peace River requires updated aerial imagery suitable for mapping and analysis, as well as elevation data including accurate bare-earth and full-feature digital elevation models to support municipal analysis, planning, and management. Existing datasets require modernization to reflect current ground conditions, new development, and changes to built infrastructure.

Approach

We executed an integrated aerial acquisition program combining simultaneous LiDAR and aerial imagery collection using company-owned aircraft and sensors. Conducting both acquisitions concurrently ensured full data alignment while minimizing mobilization risk and weather-related delays.

Technologies and workflows leveraged included:

  • LiDAR acquisition and point cloud classification

  • Photogrammetric imagery processing and orthorectification

  • LiDAR-derived DEM generation for improved vertical accuracy

  • GIS integration into municipal data structuring

  • Semi-automated workflows with full in-house quality control

Outcome / Lessons Learned

The project delivers a current, high-accuracy geospatial baseline to support the Town of Peace River’s infrastructure, planning, and development operations. The integrated LiDAR and imagery approach ensures reliable elevation modelling, improved mapping accuracy, and datasets suitable for long-term municipal asset management.

Through this project, we further refined third-party quality control procedures and enhanced workflows for producing seamless, municipality-ready datasets aligned with provincial standards.
