Project Summary
Tack-Tek is a mobile application designed to improve saddle fitting by capturing accurate three-dimensional scans of a horse’s back using LiDAR sensors integrated into modern iPhone devices. The application enables riders, saddle fitters, and equestrian professionals to generate detailed 3D point cloud data and measurements that help ensure proper saddle fit, improving both horse comfort and riding performance.
The project combines geomatics expertise with mobile technology to bring advanced 3D scanning capabilities into the equestrian industry. By leveraging LiDAR hardware available in consumer smartphones and proprietary processing algorithms, Tack-Tek allows users to capture accurate spatial measurements quickly and easily in real-world environments.
Problem / Objective
Proper saddle fitting is essential for horse health, rider performance, and long-term comfort. Traditionally, saddle fitting has relied on manual measurement techniques and visual assessment by experienced professionals.
These methods can be time-consuming and difficult to replicate consistently across different horses and locations.
The objective of the Tack-Tek project was to create a mobile solution that could:

Approach
The OGL development team designed TACK-TEK to leverage the LiDAR sensors integrated into modern iPhone devices. During a scan, the application captures spatial point cloud data for measurement and analysis.
OGL developed custom processing workflows and algorithms that extract key measurements relevant to saddle fitting. These measurements help riders and saddle fitters evaluate how a saddle interacts with the horse’s back and identify potential fit issues.
By combining mobile hardware capabilities with geomatics expertise, the team created a streamlined scanning workflow that allows users to capture accurate spatial data quickly in real-world environments.
